How Is a Pebble Born? - Yehiel created his first embroidered stone after a stroll along the Bregenzer River in Austria. In the variety of pebbles on the riverbank, he saw the imprints of a multitude of memories and experiences that made them what he saw in front of him. Their textures told the story of their formation over thousands of years, through the accumulation of layers that revealed periods of pressure and fluctuation, lines and mineral stains painted by nature, a smooth surface created by geological processes of erosion and softening; their eternal age condensed in his mortal hand. He saw that we too are like the stones, built from painful processes and traumas, pressure, cracks, and challenges. It is what makes us special and unique, and through it, we evolve.
This existential experience at the Bregenzer River was so significant and powerful for Yehiel that immediately afterwards he entered the studio and created the first pebble. How is it done? How do materials behave? How do you create an object that tells the story of a stone but in a material that is floating, light, and soft? How is a pebble born?
